Can completely draining laptop batteries damage the HD or other components?

laptop batteries

I’ve read that a good way to maintain your laptop’s battery is to completely drain them every once in a while. this implies that you let the system running, turn off automatic standby and hibernation, and wait until the battery dies out. This means that the system will not properly shutdown.

Will this do any harm to any of the hardware or components of the laptop?

I realized that a good way to take care of files and settings is to logout from windows and let the system drain from within the login screen, so that nothing is loaded and all files and settings have been saved.

But what about the hardware? I’m thinking that when properly shutting down, all moving parts (i.e. HD) all move back to whatever their position should be, but if you don’t shut them down, they lose power wherever and stop right there. Won’t these things cause problems?

If so, what is a good way to completely drain batteries? and should it be done as often as possible?

  1. no da?ar? los cuae del hdd que no tiene nada a hacer con la bater?a es s? bueno drenar totalmente la causa de la bater?a la bater?a lleva a cabo una memoria

  2. I just turn off my computer and leave it for a few days, the battery usually takes care of itself to drain completely.

  3. No, it is actually reccomended to help keep up battery life.

  4. You get the best life from a rechargable battery by completely draning it and then recharging it.It prolongs the life of the battery. My laptop is several years old and has been allowed to go flat at least once a month and the battery and laptop still work as if new.No problems.

  5. That is an excellent question… I don’t know. You do have a point that you are running electronics at a lower voltage than specked. However, the voltage coming out of the battery is usually dropped down a few volts. Thats the voltage the system operates on until it dips below that, then things shut down.. So that voltage safety cushion most likely protects the components… but need further research….
